Chapter 548 - 538: Sacrifice
Chapter 548 - 538: Sacrifice
After Jini escaped, the effect of the fear aura faded, but the group did not wake up immediately. Instead, they fell into a normal sleep, and Vera had to wake them one by one.
On the ground, Fei Yin slept without any image, drooling on her dirty cheek, muttering in her sleep: "Sister... that pair you’re wearing... is my underwear..."
Before she finished speaking, her cheek was pinched by Fei Ling, who had woken up first: "What are you dreaming about?"
On the other side, the Enchanting Demon Mengya hurriedly slipped in. She went to the corner, grabbed a Goblin from the ground, ready to slap him with two big earfuls.
However, before her hand could land, Stinky Fish suddenly opened his eyes wide.
"Mengya? Did you forget what I taught you? At times like this, you should run." Stinky Fish was somewhat incredulous.
"I rescued you, and instead of thanking me, you’re lecturing me?" Mengya’s eyes widened in anger, "I almost kicked the bucket this time, you must share at least half of your little treasure with me..."
"Wait!" Stinky Fish suddenly leaned in, sniffing hard, then jerked back, "You, how can you be in heat at a time like this? Stay away from me, stay away, I barely survived, I want to live a few more years!"
Enchanting Demons, when aroused, naturally secrete a fragrance that has an inducing effect, which is one of their race’s instinctual traits.
Mengya sniffed her arm, indeed picking up a hint of it, but just a little.
As she was about to explain herself, Stinky Fish had already pulled out a piece of rag from somewhere to tightly cover his mouth and nose, muffledly urging: "Stop wasting time! Hurry up and leave! You dared mix with these humans, you’re truly insane!"
Unfortunately, they were still a bit late.
"Demon Race!" A hateful snarl interrupted them.
A male Adventurer just waking up, even though his steps were unsteady and the anesthetic hadn’t worn off, picked up a short sword dropped by someone on the ground, blocking Mengya and Stinky Fish, his eyes full of hatred.
The other Adventurers, awakening one after another, helped each other to stand up, eyes focused on these two Alien Races, with undisguised hostility.
"Are you kidding me? I just helped save you!" Mengya was so angry that her heart-shaped tail stood up.
"You did it just to save that Goblin," the Adventurer gripped his short sword tightly, "I owe nothing to your Demon Race!"
"You...!" Mengya was about to retort furiously when something cold and hard was suddenly thrust into her hand, a short knife handed over by Stinky Fish.
And Stinky Fish himself had already tensed up, holding a dagger, ready for battle.
As tensions mounted, Vera stepped between the two sides.
Vera’s gaze did not fall on the hateful Adventurer in front of her, but looked past him, at Anton being helped up by his companions.
"Anton," his voice was calm, calmly stating facts, "She did provide crucial help, and I also promised to rescue her companion. Next time we meet on the battlefield, it’s fine to kill each other, but this time, we shouldn’t betray our benefactors."
Fei Ling and Fei Yin stood behind Vera, not against killing these two Demon Races here, but they stood out purely to support Vera.
Anton dragged his weakened body forward, putting a hand on the shoulder of the agitated companion.
"Captain, but they are Demon Race! My family was..."
"I know," Anton’s voice was weary and helpless, "But look at us now, everyone is injured, in bad condition. If we really start fighting, we might end up losing the lives we’ve just saved."
Other Adventurers also came forward, and under their persuasion, the Adventurer finally lowered his weapon, but his bloodshot eyes remained locked on Mengya and Stinky Fish.
"Hurry up and go!" Stinky Fish still kept a defensive posture, pulling Mengya along, the two quickly ran past the group of human Adventurers.
"Damn, your scent is getting stronger!"
"I can’t control it! Besides, I saved your life. Why do you have so much to complain about?" Mengya’s annoyed voice quickly faded into the forest with their departing figures.
Anton retracted his gaze, walked up to Vera, jokingly thanking: "Too bad you aren’t a noble lord... otherwise, I’d want to swear allegiance to you with my brothers."
As he spoke, he habitually stretched out his hand, trying to pat Vera on the shoulder to show friendliness and gratitude.
Unexpectedly, this made Vera’s body wobble and fall backward, fortunately caught in time by Fei Ling behind him.
"Vera!" Fei Yin also shrieked and rushed over, hurriedly pulling open Vera’s shirt.
What they saw was that his strong body was covered in large bruises, even turning black, particularly on his chest, abdomen, and back, where there was hardly any unblemished skin.
The attack from the staff-wielding Cultist didn’t seem to draw blood, but the blunt trauma caused severe internal injuries.
They urgently found and carefully fed Vera some Healing Potions they had with them.
Only when a bit of color returned to his pale face and his breathing became steady and long did everyone slightly relax.
Fei Ling, a bit distressed, stroked the bruises: "If Sirean were here... he was best at treating such internal injuries."
"I’m fine, Fei Ling." Vera sat up himself, "We should leave quickly, those Cultists we diverted could come back."
Although the team’s current strength wasn’t inadequate for a fight, everyone was in poor condition, so taking further risks was unnecessary.
The group nodded in agreement, supporting each other, and chose a path different from the one they came, quickly leaving the abandoned chapel.
On the way, Fei Ling took up the responsibility of guarding, shooting down any Slimes trying to approach.
As they went on, Vera, half-supported, suddenly turned his head, curiously asked: "Fei Yin, who’s this Sirean you’ve been mentioning?"
After a few seconds of silence, Fei Yin yelled in panic at her sister on guard, "We’re doomed, Sister! Vera... he hurt his brain!"
"?!"
...
Above in the branches, three Puki stood in a triangular formation, silently watching Vera and the others leave.
One of the Puki had a damaged Slime Core wrapped around its tentacle.
Hmm...? There sure are a lot of strange things happening here!
First, there were the Slimes under Subordinate Control.
Then suddenly appeared the virtue...
[Virtue of Sacrifice: Achieving wishes at the expense of oneself]
Not to mention what that cost is, Lin Jun was very curious, what does it mean to "achieve wishes"?
She really wanted to use it for an experiment!
But this guy belongs to Old Deng of Divine Wood.
Lin Jun glanced stealthily at Sirean, who was playing with a Puki like a ball while waiting for news.
No way, it’s the first time seeing a virtue, and with such an outrageous description, I can’t let Divine Wood monopolize it.
I’ll have to find a way to sneak a Puki in, once the rice is cooked, even if Old Deng of Divine Wood returns, he shouldn’t have much to say!
Thinking this, one of the three Puki leaped and quietly followed along.
